Instrumental Variation , a project designed and built by students in Adam Marcus's "Modular Variations" spring 2013 studio at the University of Minnesota School of Architecture, was constructed for the studio's final review on the exterior terrace of Ralph Rapson Hall, the classic midcentury building designed by Thorshov and Cerny that serves as home to the architecture school. The studio and the project are the latest iteration of Adam's ongoing research into the design of flexible and reconfigurable formwork as a way to economically and strategically introduce variation into design and fabrication processes. The installation consists of structurally repetitive yet unique cast concrete modules produced by a flexible mold that allowed for careful calibration of the apertures across the wall. See the project page and the studio blog for detailed information on the design and fabrication process.
