On September 19, 2023, Adam Marcus presented at the symposium “Material Variance: Or, the Inherent Variability of Raw Materials in Architecture” at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation. The symposium, organized by Lola Ben-Alon of the Natural Materials Lab, explores the variability of natural materials as a rich alternative to prevailing paradigms of highly engineered, refined, and standardized construction materials. Marcus presented the paper “Ecological Tectonics,” featuring recent research into earthen and ceramic fabrication techniques, as part of the “Matter and Alchemistry” panel along with David Benjamin of Columbia GSAPP, Mae-Ling Lokko of Yale University, and Leslie Lok of Cornell University.
